3 Advanced Sun Protection Options You Should Know About

Posted by Andrea Sanders on May 28, 2015

It’s that time again: pools and beaches are open, festival season is in full swing, we’re sparking up the backyard grill, and road trip adventures await. All these outdoor allures may feel like a conspiracy if you’re prone to sunburn or concerned about the aging effects of UV rays. These concerns don’t have to keep you in the shadows and out of the fun, though. You can up your defenses beyond habitual applications of SPF. Here, we give you three refreshingly simple ideas to help: sunscreen for your car, sun exposure trackers, and sun protection supplements. Each works against sun damage in a different way. And whether you decide to try just one or all three, you’re sure to have a healthier, more carefree summer.

Idea #1: Sunscreen for Your Car

Automotive films are better known as “custom window tints” than sun block, but LLumar’s entire line of automotive films will protect you from 99% of harmful UV rays, every day. And with just a single application. No worries if the look of custom-tinted windows isn’t for you, either. Ask for AIR80, a clear film from LLumar that provides sun protection without tint. Still, you’re probably asking yourself: is this really necessary?

Yes, being inside a vehicle feels a lot like being indoors. You’ve got cushy seating, stereo sound, and air conditioning. But you can get a lot of sun when you’re out driving around, so it’s really more like being outdoors. In fact, a recent study by the St. Louis University School of Medicine found that people who spend more time driving in a car are more likely to develop skin cancer on the side that’s exposed to more sunlight, the left side. And one in five of Americans develop skin cancer in their lifetime. So vehicular sunscreen’s really a no-brainer. Just like regular sunscreen.

Idea #2: Sun Exposure Trackers

The next big thing in wearable tech is not that watch named after a fruit. It’s devices that protect you from sun damage, with a warning when you’ve had too much. Like fitness monitors, they come in styles that can be clipped to clothing or worn on your wrist, at a wide range of price points and with varied features. Choices include CliMate, June, SunFriend, SunSprite, Suntracker, TZOA, and Violet. If you’re interested in trying out a sun tracker, there’s probably one that’s right for you.

You’ll find low-tech trackers that change color in response to UVA and UVB rays, stand-alone devices with flashing lights to signal it’s time to find shade, and advanced options that pair with Bluetooth-enabled smartphone apps. Styles run the range as well, with some disposable, some like modern jewelry, and some in bright plastic. Many devices offer variable settings, so you can adjust sensitivity to match your skin tone or SPF. Some even figure exposure based on cloud cover and other environmental factors, too. Still, the most major plus for sun trackers is that wearing them can become a daily habit that teaches you about sun exposure in all times of year and weather conditions, so you have better knowledge and awareness of risk.

Idea #3: Sun Protection Supplements

The idea of a pill or liquid for sun protection is hard to resist: no messy lotions or sprays, no ridiculous looking burns in spots you miss, quick and easy “reapplication.” Really, it’s no surprise that Heliocare Sun Protection Pills, Sunsafe Rx Supplements and Osmosis UV Neutralizer, the first “drinkable sunscreen” are getting lots of attention. Full disclosure before we go any further: the FDA has evaluated none of these products’ claims. Still, since many of us have dabbled in vitamin therapies or diet changes – so it makes sense to mention sun-benefit dietary supplement options here.

Now, diving in: pills in this category are basically loaded with antioxidants. Doses vary, but all are based on the theory that antioxidants help with recovery from sun exposure, so can support healing and help defend against skin cancer. This is not the same as SPF, and these supplements are clear about that. The drinkable sunscreen is bolder: you’re advised to drink it an hour before sun exposure, and to expect around 3 hours of 30 SPF sun protection. While reviews are mixed on whether or not the product works, everyone seems to agree the flavor is pleasant. And pills are pretty much tasteless as well. So you can do a taste test on any supplement with no risk. Whether you decide to test-drive them in other ways? That’s up to you. We’ll take responsibility only for providing some interesting water cooler banter.

Before You Get Out to Enjoy the Sun

Hopefully your takeaway from this post is more practical and than conversational – even if a specific item doesn’t work for you, most everything  we’ve shared is an idea that can help with sun protection. Here’s a recap of what we’ve covered, to help you stay happier and healthier in the sunny months: apply window film to your vehicle just once for daily UV protection, be more aware of your personal sun exposure, and support your body’s recovery from the sun’s effects.

Andrea Van Ness Sanders is the LLumar Brand Communications Manager, as well as a wife and kids’ super-fan.  Since joining the company Andrea has learned much about window film benefits, whether on cars, homes or offices. Her son recently turned 16 and earned the privilege of driving a hand-me-down station wagon. To make it look less like a “mom” car, Andrea and her husband surprised their son with window tint. It added to the cool factor while keeping the interior cooler during the hot summer months.  She recalls growing up around cars because her father loved them. That love wore off on Andrea so in her spare time and as a DIYer, she enjoys detailing the family cars. While their two teenaged children keep them busy from sun up to sun down, Andrea manages to find some time for one of her favorite interests, home interior projects.
